Lamar Drops Another Close One in 7-3 Loss
Game 2 of The Texas UIL Bi-District Championship, between Lamar and Weatherford was another nail biter for the Kangaroos as they defeated the Vikings 7-3 on Friday night at Kangaroo Field.
Lamar’s offense got going in the top of the 1st. Kyle Arnsberg worked a 2 out walk and Patrick Duncan laced a double over the centerfielder’s head to score Chris McCauley (running for Arnsberg) from 1st base. Shane Laronde followed with a double to left, scoring Duncan, and the Vikes were up 2-0. Weatherford answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning.
In the 2nd inning, Clay Hadley led off with a double to left. Adrian Meza sacrificed him to 3rd and Hadley scored on an infield error by Weatherford. The Roos once again added a run in the bottom of the inning and the two teams would go to the 3rd with Lamar up 3-2.
In the bottom of the 3rd, with the score tied at 3, Lamar would be the victim of yet another controversial call by the umpires. With runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out, 2nd baseman Tyler Wilson fielded a ground ball up the middle. He flipped to Duncan coming across 2nd base, who then relayed a throw to 1st for an apparent inning ending double play. But, the 2nd base umpire ruled that the Vikes missed 2nd base. This allowed a run to score, which gave Weatherford a 4-3 lead. They would add a run in the 5th and 2 in the 6th. The controversial ruling appeared to “take the wind out of a feisty Lamar’s sails” as they would mange only one more hit the rest of the way.
The loss eliminates Lamar from the Texas UIL Playoffs and brings the Viking season to a close.
Lamar Leaders • Patrick Duncan 1 for 3, Double, RBI, Run Scored • Shane Laronde 1 for 3, Double, RBI • Clay Hadley 1 for 3, Double, Run Scored |

Controversial Call at Home Plate Allows Roos to Score Unearned Run in 8thWhat a game! A capacity crowd looked on as the heavily favored Weatherford Kangaroos got all they could handle as they squeaked by the Vikings 2-1 in a Bi-District playoff game at Viking Field on Thursday night.
Highly touted Josh Easley started on the mound for Weatherford and went the distance as he pitched an 8 inning complete game. He allowed 1 run on only 2 hits while striking out 16. However, he was matched by Lamar’s starter, Shane Laronde for 7 innings as the two locked horns in a classic pitching duel. Laronde went 7 innings allowing an unearned run on 2 hits and striking out 9 Kangaroo batters.
Weatherford hit the board in the top of the 1st scoring an unearned run on a throwing error, a sacrifice bunt and a fielders choice. The Viking defense and Laronde’s pitching would stifle the Roos offense through the 4th, keeping the score at 1-0.
In the bottom of the 4th, Lamar found a way to get to Easley. Tyler Wilson worked a 1 out walk followed by a Kyle Arnsberg base on balls to put runners at 1st and 2nd. With 2 outs, Patrick Duncan lined a single to center scoring Wilson and the game was tied 1-1.
The pitching duel continued as both starters pitched through the 7th. Laronde finished off his performance by striking out the side in the 7th. Duncan relieved Laronde to start the 8th. Weatherford got a “seeing eye” single between 1st and 2nd to lead off the 8th. A sacrifice bunt and a balk advanced the runner to third. The Roos attempted a suicide squeeze but, in failing to get the bunt down the runner was caught between home and 3rd. The ensuing play ends with catcher Kyle Arnsberg applying the tag on a diving runner for what appeared to be an out. However the umpire ruled that the runner was safe and Weatherford took a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings would threaten in the bottom of the 8th. Clay Hadley led off with an infield single. Meza then executed a sacrifice bunt that gets Hadley into scoring position at 2nd and only 1 out. Easley, however, finds a way to wiggle out of the jam, ending the game with a strikeout.
Lamar Leaders • Shane Laronde: 7 innings pitched, 1 run (unearned), 9 strikeouts • Patrick Duncan: 1-3, single and RBI, 1 inning pitched, 1 run (unearned), 1 strikeout • Tyler Wilson: 1BB, run scored • Clay Hadley: 1-3

Lamar and Martin Combine to Score 29 Runs – 29 HitsThe Lamar Vikings and Martin Warriors faced off in the final District 4-5A game of the year at Warrior Field on Saturday night.. The two rivals went at each other with a vengeance in a game that featured 3 home runs, 29 hits and a score more fitting to football than baseball. The Warriors came out on top with a 17-12 victory.
The game appeared to be a rout as Martin built a 9-1 lead through the first 3 innings. But the Vikings came alive in the top of the 4th with 4 runs. Clay Hadley led off with a walk followed by an Adrian Meza double into left field. Danny Dondero ripped a single into left-center, scoring Hadley. Two outs later Tyler Wilson drew a base on balls to load the bases and Kyle Arnsberg smashed a double to dead center to clear the bases as Lamar closed the score to 9-5.
Martin scratched out a run in their half of the 4th to stretch the lead to 10-5. But the Vikes were just warming up. Shane Laronde reached on an error followed by back to back singles by Patrick Duncan and Parker Robinson…loading the bases with no outs. Meza lined a single to right and Dondero plated two more runs with a single. Duncan crossed the plate on an error and the Vikings had pulled to within one run at 10-9.
The Warriors answered with 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th. A Viking error opened the door to 6 unearned runs and appeared to seal the game for Martin. However, the Vikings would not quit. Dondero reached on a hit by pitch and Duncan moved him to 3rd with his 2nd hit of the night. A warrior error scored Dondero and a fielder’s choice plated Duncan as the Vikes narrowed the score to 17-11.
Duncan pitched the 6th and after walking the leadoff hitter, proceeded to strike out Martin’s “1”, “2”, and “3” hitters.
The Vikes wound up the offense one more time in the 7th. Wilson laced his 2nd double of the game and Duncan followed with his 3rd hit as the Vikes pulled to within 17-12. The game ended with two runners on and a nervous Martin crowd breathing a sigh of relief.
The Vikings got a yeoman’s performance from senior Adrian Meza as he went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI. Junior Tyler Wilson added two doubles and scored twice. Patrick Duncan (senior) added a 3 for 5, 1 RBI night with a scoreless inning pitched and Kyle Arnsberg drove in 3 runs with a bases loaded Double.
The 4th Seeded, District 4-5A, Lamar Vikings will return to action on Thursday, May 14 with a first round playoff series with the Weatherford Kangaroos. Game one of the best of three series will be played at Lamar. Game two will be Friday, May 15 at Weatherford and the “IF NEEDED” 3rd game will be back at Lamar on Saturday night. Game time for all three matches will be 7:30p. |
